Developments & Diversions
October was very busy, I was working on a model for a new commission in Kirkintilloch where I already have three Gateway Markers in the Cowgate. The new work will be in granite and will be another animal in the same vein as the Polar bear, which I’m very excited about making – quite a challenge. I was also doing the hidden work behind a commission, deciding on the scale of the work, balancing the budget with the cost of materials and services and attending to the contractual side of things, finally putting everything together in a presentation to share with the client.
For the Dunfermline Learning Campus commission I’ve been working with Fife Contemporary, planning activities and engaging artists and architects who are skillful in their unique practice, and great communicators. They will run their own workshops and help me gather information and ideas from the community at the new campus, to inform the public artwork that I will make next year. They will bring much more to the project than I can on my own. It’s all coming together!
Research included a trip to Fife College in Glenrothes to find out about creative courses that run there, meeting students and staff and seeing some of the fantastic work that’s being made, above some furniture models.
I’m spending more time at home at the moment which is great, but the days are too short, saying that I was visiting an old friend in Aberdeen on Monday and for a change stopped and took time to look at the amazing statue of William Wallace in front of His Majesty’s Theatre, the base is built from blocks of Corrennie granite and makes the colossal bronze of Wallace, by William Grant Stevenson RSA look fantastic, it’s in great condition considering it’s from 1884.
Contrary to last month’s blog stating that I was going to change the frequency of them, evidently I have continued with the monthly schedule!
