Attention to Detail
This is a close-up of the rather over the top frame around Joseph Noël Paton’s Vigilante et Orate which I saw in the Carnegie Galleries, Dunfermline at the beginning of February.
In the same exhibition this oak framed collection of drawings depicting the seasons also features marquetry describing them in squares above the pencil drawings. The marquetry on the left below is the detail depicting winter, on the right is an inlaid panel designed by Sir Robert Lorimer and made by Whytock & Reid, Edinburgh. I photographed this in the National Museum of Scotland, on the label it said it was on loan from Hew Lorimer, so I assume it came from Kellie Castle.
Below an object which I came across in a post on the Pitt Rivers Museum’s Instagram account at Christmas time donated by a Mrs D.O. Hill, I immediately knew who she was – she was born Amelia Robertson Paton and was an exceptional, pioneering female sculptor, the sister of Joseph Noël Paton and Waller Hugh Paton.
